Bicycle Travel Procrastination: Just get moving!

We humans often like to overcomplicate things. It could be said that this is a mechanism to delay actions we are apprehensive about, especially something new that may take us out of our comfort zones.

This happens with many hobbies, including cycling. Is my bicycle good enough?  Am I fit enough for a two-week trip?  What if I get lost?  Where will I sleep?  The list goes on and on.

I would be lying if I said I had never had these thoughts before heading away. But what I have learned over the years is that once you start pedalling, all those questions disappear after the first mile. They are soon replaced with thoughts like, "Why have I been putting off this trip?"

All you need is a little planning or an idea for the first day or two, some baseline fitness, and access to a bicycle that will last longer than the first day. Work out your direction, start pedalling, and the rest will happen as you experience new places, people, and cultures. That is the beauty of bicycle travel—you don't need much to get started, and you certainly don't need much to have a good time.

So, if you are stuck with a serious case of procrastination, give yourself a wake-up call and just go for it.  You will not regret it - you will ask yourself why you didn't start sooner!
